Mario and I are safe and sheltered until Wednesday. We’re having meatloaf, mashed potatoes and peas. We’re very pleased for the moment. Looking forward to foolish things this evening. A nice bit of comfort food, crawling under some covers with Mario, knitting up some bears, watching “Hot in Cleveland,” and finally getting at least 8 hours of deep sleep.
Our repreive allows us a little more time to find something solid, something long term. I’ll not worry about that too much this evening. Tonight? Tonight I know when the sun goes down, she and I won’t be on the streets. We’ll be fed, left alone to do some much needed resting, and wake tomarrow to claim our place in the world. Tonight, my only concern is if Mario will hog the covers as she is so inclined to do.

This last post was from July 6. Hope things have improved. I don’t know you at all. Read your story. I’m a 50-year-old singing teacher mom and wife with two kids in Florida. I have a little dog named Sammy, so I understand your love of Mario. I read a bit about your philosophical yearnings. Don’t like to be in people’s faces, but maybe check out buddhism. It’s been a big help in my life, although I call myself a boddhiwannabe. I’m just at the beginning of this path. Wish I could do more other than saying you’re in my thoughts, and I will hope for the best. Checked out your bears. Money is tight right now (students drop drastically in the summer), but as soon as I can, I will purchase one for my daughter Gabby. They are lovely, and I know she will love it. The two of us will also knit. A mantra that has helped me through lately: Buddham saranam gacchami (I go to the buddha for refuge — it’s not really turning to anything outward — it’s the buddha that’s within you and in all of us). I have spent some time reading many of your posts and I like the layout of your blog. I’m just learning about how to make my own blog and in the process of determinging blogger or wordpress. Care to share why you use wordpress?
I was given a challenge to reach out to you. On the surface it sounds like a fun thing to do but what does that really mean? I don’t want to be all fluff and clearly we don’t know each other. I can’t imagine what it is like to be in your shoes but I definitely admire your perseverance. I can relate to what it is like when you spoke of Mario and when close ones told you to basically give up Mario. I could never do that to any animal I have ever owned. My ‘animals’ are my furkids and they mean the world to me. As hard as it has been and continues to be for you – hang in there. I don’t have an magic answers but I do have a few ideas if you have no yet considered them:
I was curious about your teeth situation. The US medical care really sucks in situations like yours and for many others. I’m sure you have thought of everything possible but there was a time I did not have insurance and contacted a school of dentistry. Have you tried that? They have much reduced rates – like astronically low but you kind of become a guinea pig but all of the work is overseen by professional dentists. It’s worth trying if you haven’t yet.
Lastly, I was curious about your bears…if I’ve read your site correctly, there is no listed cost but just a donation. Is there any way you could share an average costs? If not publicly then privately? Would you consider accepting a donation but giving the bear to someone who needs one? I would send you cat food but not sure where exactly you are – that reminds me – I have been involved in a program called ‘Pets on Wheels’ through the Red Cross which is exactly like Meals on Wheels for elderly folks. I have delivered pet foods to owners of various ages who have a hard time making ends meet and we of course do not want people to give up their loved ones. This is another thing worth checking out until you are able to get on your feet again. Back to your bears – this is another thing I was able to relate to – when your family completely disregards what you are doing and asks if you have found a job yet. Kudos for you for holding onto something you love. I can completely envision that having a solid place to stay, you would be able to earn a living on this. Without that, it is going to be impossible to spend the time and energy needed to create your product. Have you considered connecting with elderly folks as a possible live in? Not sure if you are interested in helping someone but in return you would have a place to stay, I would imagine many elderly folks would enjoy the company of Mario and not to be stereotypical but knitting would be a common interest as well.
I am curious how you do and will follow your blog. You seem like a very nice gentleman in a very unfortunate circumstance. I applaud you for not turning to crime or other negative ways to make a living cuz that would be an easy thing to do and certainly more profitable.

The first thing I wanted to say was thank you for such a great letter. Yes, I do still believe communication between people regardless of electronic or otherwise is still called correspondence. It was thoughtful of you to think of me so much. The dentist I saw did the work for free, knowing my situation. He’s a highly recommended, well established man who knew I didn’t have the funds, but still took on my case. I am forever indebted to him. My bears! I list them on Etsy, there is a link to my shop on my blog. And yes, I do so love wordpress much more than some of the other blogs because of its ease, its information. I have thought about helping elderly people in exchange for a room, but the world has poisoned so many minds. What on earth would a ruffian, dirty jeaned man with a cat be doing in someone’s home other than to rob them? That’s what I was met with.

I have no idea how frustrating and scary it must be not to know whether you’re going to have shelter for the next night or not, and I wish you can find some safety in your life. You and Mario (I have three cats of my own, so I know how dear she must be to you) are in my thoughts and in my prayers. Unfortunately I’m a poor student myself, so I can’t donate more than a few dollars – but at least I have a steady source of income and a roof above my head. I bet you’ll be amazed to know that a 19 year old girl all the way from Singapore has read and knows of your story. You’re an inspiration, honestly. Through every obstacle you push through with amazing optimism, never wavering from your beliefs and I personally think thats just amazing. This is going to sound terribly cheesy but you’re like an angel giving hope through your bears and handiwork. Whether its through your writing or your knitting, you work hard and that shows in your products. Its not just a bear made in a factory, but one made with such care and love it means so much more. (: When I first read your blog I actually wished I could invite you to stay with my family! (please don’t think I’m a creep) Hahaha I’d love to learn how to knit, and you’d get great friends in my siblings. (do you like kids and dogs?) But you know what, I think someday you’re going to have a great home, with great people, doing what you love. With the strength and perseverance you have, I can’t see anything but good in your future. Press on! You’re awesome!
