A Little Boy’s Bunny

Don’t you remember the great story of the Velveteen Rabbit? Little boy loved his stuffed rabbit, loved it dearly. Then the little boy gets sick and practically everything he owns, clutched at, held for comfort, including the stuffed rabbit, had to be burned so the boy wouldn’t be sick again once he recovered. However, with the magic of love, the little bunny became a real bunny, sped on through the woods and lived on.

So, here’s my bunny, my rabbit, come to life to speed on through the world and become real, loved, and magically on his own. I purposely made one ear slightly off to the side, a sign of his approach of quietness, of his tenderness, and of his sympathy.

  1. Greg, I am sorry to hear you are ill.

This post and the sweet rabbit you made particularly struck a chord with me.

My favorite toy as a child was a very worn, refurbished velvet rabbit, that I called ‘Green-ears’ (because of two felt ears that were sewn on to replace his original ears), that had been my mother’s when she was a little girl. I too got sick once when I was about three years old and they put the rabbit away, on the doctor’s advice. I promptly lost a lot of weight and was clearly ‘mourning’, so my parents wisely and kindly, gave the rabbit back to me. To this day, it is one of my most prized possessions, wrapped in a velvet case and stored lovingly in a drawer in my bedroom. For all these reasons and because I read the Velveteen Rabbit to my daughter when she was little, I so appreciated and was touched by your post.

Get well and keep knitting these inspirational treasures.

    1. OH wow. I can’t believe you still have that rabbit. I’ve been thinking of working of a bear made with left over skeins, sort of a “coat of many colors” kinda bear, much like your rabbit with green ears.

I really loved your comment, and I can’t thank you enough for the kind words. πŸ™‚

  2. Very cute! When I turned 1 my Grandma gave me a stuffed mouse who is named “Mouser”. I still have him. The poor guy is so worn out and torn up, but I can’t bear to get rid of him. I also have the copy of the Velveteen Rabbit that another Grandma gave to my brother and me when we were kids. I just recently read it to my 4 year old son…That is a wonderful book.

  3. Somewhere recently I saw a photo. It was about some organization that makes crocheted bears for charity. The photo showed a very small boy, aged 3 or 4 at the most, clutching a handmade bear and burying his face in it. The comfort it gave him was palpable even though the photo only showed the top of his head. I feel like your connection with your own inner little boy gives you a depth of compassion and understanding that is very rare. Somehow through all of this that you are going through, you are able to bring a rare blessing to others. The bear he was hugging was a standard-looking handmade bear. You are making velveteen rabbits and Winnie the Poohs. They come with personality and a heart, and that’s because of YOUR heart. There’s no doubt that you have a special purpose for your life. Hang in there and keep the faith.

  4. P.S. Ever thought of writing children’s stories yourself??? With your knitted bears and rabbits as the characters and illustrations???

  5. I love the bunny Greg, he can be a symbol of hope. You are so talented and I am sure things are going to get better for you. I know sometimes it is hard to stay positive, I have had alot of heartache in my life and I try to turn negatives into positives to keep my spirits up. You have alot of support behind you and sending you postive happy vibes. Love to u and Mario xx

  6. When I was born I also got a little rabbit holding a baby bottle and one of his ears was off to the side as well. I never cuddled with this bunny (I fell in love with a monkey) but I still have the bunny. I never had the courage to give it away. It waits for me back home with my little monkey.

    H&K

  7. I hope u get well soon. Keep faith. My life is gives me good things but then is always taken away. Especially in relationships. But I just learn from yesterday, live for today and hope for tomorrow. Hang in there buddy
